An Excellent Sewing Machine!
This is an excellent sewing machine for beginners. The reason I say this is because of the foot pedal. Usually, you don't get much resistance with a higher model, say a more expensive model from Bernina, but with the Brother there is more than enough tension that you feel as if you're in more control of the needle. I do love that about this machine, but if you have been sewing for many years, you might find this annoying and time consuming.

The XR3774 is an extremely well crafted machine. It's pretty lightweight, under 15 pounds. And doesn't suffer from poor build quality. This machine has beautifu stitch quality. I know, I know, I should've mentioned stitch quality sooner. The XR3774 excels in this area. It covers 37 different stitches. I have not tried them all, and honestly neither will the most advanced sewer just looking to make garments. But if you want to dip into more decorative stitching, such as for quilting, you have some great options here. I have tried the most commonly used from straight to zig-zag and they are just perfect without the need to constantly readjust tension. Nothing is more annoying that having to adjust tension when switching between fabrics on the same garment. The XR3774 handled moving from cotton to satin on a zig-zag stitch without an issue. I am especially pleased with this due to the fact that I was using a pretty worn needle (I'm not ashamed of that) and there was no snagging. The hitting that the machine provided is pretty dang good!

The LED is great. I was able to sew in dim light and get a really good view of the nooks of a hidden zipper. Also, the bobbin didn't jam, happens often with cheaper models.

Again, if you're buying your first sewing machine, I highly recommended this model. Heck, even if you're looking for a steady work horse this is a solid choice. I wasn't too familiar with Brother in this category. I have been a Singer, Bernina girl for ages. But this machine has opened my eyes.

Sweet and simple with a great price point!
Completely what I've been looking for! Simple, easy and not a lot of fluff. I learned to sew as a little girl on a machine that required me to thread my own needle and the bobbin was not as simple! Was I pleasantly surprised to open this baby up and have it all ready to sew within a short amount of time. The "quick guide" had me filling a bobbin, easily threading the needle and ready to sew in no time at all. An instructional DVD is available for those that haven't a clue as to what they're doing so it would be perfect for a "first timer".

Pros:
- I'm excited to try out all the accessories (total of 8) that came with the machine.
- The foot pedal has enough tension that you feel like you're in complete control as opposed to the machine running you!
- 37 different stitches
- great LED lighting
- button hole maker… not every machine has this!
- automatic needle threader
- quilting table
- instruction DVD with lifetime support for the machine

Cons:
- I wish there was a more constructed carrying case for the machine. There's no structure to is and pretty flimsy.

Overall, this machine is a dream for a first timer or for someone who's been sewing for years. Perfect gift at a perfect price.

I can't sew and this is my first sewing machine and it's GREAT!
What a great machine for a beginner! Well made, sturdy and easy to set up and use!!!!!

I am past the age where I would want to sew clothing, draperies, anything like that, but what I do want to do is make flannel pillowcases and to cut down sheets/blankets/throws, etc for our cats and then pass some on to our vet (they are always in need of bedding) and I have lots of things I can use having bought way too many from online shopping networks during clearance sales, etc. :)

So far I am doing good because this machine is almost foolproof and if I can say that, then someone who is already knowledgeable of sewing machines will really enjoy using it.

And, maybe I will have so much fun I will progress on to other things - never too old to learn!

AND, no bobbin jams which has had me afraid of sewing machines since home ec classes in school!

I LOVE this little machine!

Really Nice
This sewing and quilting machine is very good, even though it could be a bit confusing for a beginner like me. However this comes with an instruction manual (actually several lol). Oh and this also comes with an instructional dvd. I was surprised that this sewing machine was fairly lightweight, which is a good thing. I also like the color of it and the design on the side. This has 37 built-in stitches which include decorative and quilting stitches and also a blind hem. This also has 8 sewing feet, including a zipper, blind stitch, narrow hemmer, and buttonhole. This sewing machine has an automatic button-holer. This has a built-in free arm to make sewing easy for cuffs or sleeves for example. The needle is also jam resistant.

So overall, I think that this is a nice and good machine to have.

but the replacement has worked fine for years now
We've been using a Brother computerized sewing machine that was a bit less expensive than this one for 6 years now. It died early on when we bought it, but the replacement has worked fine for years now.

This machine was easy to setup, and it took no time at all to get it running. We haven't tried particularly thick fabric yet, but the old machine was able to hem jeans without bogging down too much. The nicest feature of this machine has been the large table. our old machine lacked that feature. This machine also came with more feet than our old model. This machine has fewer stitch options than our old machine, but it does have quite a few that are not available on the older machine.

If you need a light duty machine that's flexible, and easy to use this is a great model to get started with.

Easy to Use Very Nice Machine
This is a very nice sewing machine. Basic machines like this one have improved so much so that they now include features which were once only available on the most expensive models. I found this easy to set up, the threading diagrams are even printed on the surface, and this threads in a very logical manner. I only used the straight and zigzag stitches so far, and switching is easy. It may not be as fast for me as my old workhorse Pfaff, but this one is not as heavy to get out either! I didn't try the additional work table, but the dust cover is a good sturdy one. The operation of this machine is smooth and fairly quiet which makes using this machine a pleasure. I am anxious to use more of the features of this very nice sewing machine!

Easy to use, lots of versatility
This is a great sewing machine with a lot of handy features. It's easy to set up and use--almost as soon as we got it out of the box we were using it to sew Halloween costumes. The wide table, LED lit work area, and 37 built in stitches are a big improvement over our previous machine, but it still was not difficult to get started.

An instructional DVD and hard copy user manual are included, along with quick guides for several of the features. It's a versatile, even attractive machine sold at a reasonable price
