If You're On the Edge
First off, I've never been an audiophile. Although I love music, and I listen to it a lot, I had been okay with Apple EarPods for the past year or two--until I decided to get something really great.
Clearly, the choice was between the M50 or the M50x. Although everything points to the fact that the sound's pretty much the same, there are some features that you might want to pay the extra money for. The removable cable is actually really useful--having a super long cable would've definitely subdued my overall experience. Things like that. If you're considering the M50 because you're super tight on money, then don't sweat it: you're not missing too much. You're still getting the car, although maybe not the latest model's new features.
Another note: I found the headphones terribly uncomfortable at first. I think stretching's a must, and there are many threads on Head-Fi Forums about doing so. It can make the world of difference in whether you enjoy the headphones or not.
So finally, on the sound: at first I was definitely underwhelmed. There had been so much hype about these headphones (and the whole audiophile experience) that I expected to be blown away. I'm sad to report that I wasn't. Having recessed mids really caught me off-guard, and it took me a bit to get used to the headphone's sound signature. I could hear that the headphones were definitely good quality, but I just wasn't convinced. I've been listening with them for about a month now, and although I enjoyed my headphones (having gotten used to the sound signature), I still wasn't convinced.
So I compared them to some regular headphones.
And trust me, I have never looked back. The regular headphones had no differentiation in sound signature, and everything sounded clumped together. Also, everything sounds super fragmentized--the M50/x does an amazing job with giving you extremely detailed feedback while at the same time not sharpening the details to be unpleasing to your ears. The recessed mids, in the end, were a good thing: I could hear everything a bit more spaced out, and that let me enjoy the music more. And as such, I can't not recommend the M50/x. They're great great headphones, that you should at least give a whirl.
Part of me was disappointed that I didn't have a chance to color my music at all--these are studio headphones, after all, and they're meant to be (more or less) flat: you're not going to get the "Beats" sound. Which is unfortunate, right? Wouldn't it be great if you could have both the studio headphone sound, and be able to color your music when you're into that?
Enter the FiiO E6 Amp. At first, I didn't really care much for it, but now I realize that it's a great way to hear a really paunchy, present bass when you want it. So if I'm listening to Kanye's Love Lockdown, and I really want my ears to feel the song, I just plug in the amp and mess with the EQ settings until I'm really feeling it--the headphones are more than capable of producing the coloration: they just need that extra input from the amp.
TL;DR? If you're on the edge, give the headphones a shot. And by that, I mean, a decently timed shot. Might be the best purchase that you make all year. I think that before, part of me felt like listening to music was a chore--now I look forward to every sitting. You can't beat quality.
Good luck, and happy listening!
Excellent quality and brilliant sound reproduction!
These are an outstanding set of monitor headphones. I like the fact that they have great audio quality but for me the comfort is just as important. They are a large set of headphones but they only weigh in at 10 ounces. They are made of plastic but they do have a steel curved inner headband slide. They are ruggedly designed and made and they are highly adjustable. They fold up for easy storage or for taking with you on a trip. The ear cups turn and you can move them enough to listen to one earphone without even having them on your head. You can also extend the ear cups to fit even a large sized head like mine.
They are extremely comfortable. The head band is nicely padded and the ear cups are large and well-padded also. My entire ear fit into the ear cups and the padding rested on the sides of my head. It made wearing the headphones for hours very comfortable. Each of the cables that come with the headphones has a special plug design that allows the plugs to lock into the headphones so it is not easily pulled out by accident. The heavy padding on the ear cups also acts as a passive noise reduction system to keep outside noises from interfering with your music enjoyment. The left and right ear cups are clearly marked and it is easy to see which way to wear the headphones.
The sound quality from the headphones is very good. The bass is just a little flatter than some headphones but that is to be expected from monitor quality headphones where the music is reproduced as recorded without any boosting of the bass. If you are looking for a deeper bass sound don't worry as the headphones come with all of the accessories that you need to adjust the sound quality any way you want.
What's in the box?
* The headphones themselves
* A vinyl carrying bag with a pull draw string
* A short connection cable that is 51 inches long
* A long cable that is 10 feet and 2 inches long
* A coil cable that is 6 feet when not extended and 10 feet long when extended
* A thread on ¼ inch stereo jack that is gold plated
* All of the cables have gold plated plugs on them including the cables for the accessory amplifier.
In addition the headphones come with a FiiO E6 stereo amplifier. In that accessory box you will find:
* The stereo amplifier that weighs in at less that ½ ounce
* Two clips to allow you to attach it to your clothes, a travel bag or whatever you wish.
* A charging cable that is 22 inches long that has USB to Mini USB connections on it.
* A short cable that is 4 inches long
* A long cable that is 32 inches long
I show all of these items in my video.
The amplifier has a built in rechargeable Lithium battery that uses 5 VDC at 500 milliamps to charge. You can charge it with your computer's USB output port or use an AC USB wall charger or a car charger. The amplifier is to boost the audio signal to the headphones and improve the sound quality. It has three built in EQ options and it is easy to charge and use. A fully charged amplifier will operate for about 10 hours but I only tested it for about 7 hours. It really boosts the bass and some people may like that sound quality better for their listening tastes. The kit also comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth.
Overall this is a very nice kit and you will be happy with the sound quality. The accessory amplifier is a very nice addition to the headphones and it just completes the package. I rate this kit at 5 stars.
A sample was provided for testing and evaluation.
All the sounds coming through these sound like it's actually around you. I don't write reviews, but these deserved it.
I'm not an audiophile, I'm just a guy who likes listening to things clearly and these headphones absolutely do the job. I was skeptical at first because OnlineShopDealer was selling the headphones with the amp at the same price as the normal headphone price, but these are authentic. I've looked at a lot of the YouTube reviews for the ATH-M50X before buying these and they were all correct. I was going to buy some Audio-Technica high-fidelity headphones for gaming too, but after doing Dolby sound tests with these, I don't think I'll need to anymore. You can actually hear each note from every instrument clearly, it's pretty awesome. All the sounds coming through these sound like it's actually around you. I don't write reviews, but these deserved it. I haven't used the amp yet either.
These headphones are great
I listen to them through my schiit magni magni while I play my xbox mostly. I prefer my magni to the fiio even though it's way too much power for such sensitive headphones. The fiio is fine but I don't think anyone is realistically going to use these headphones for mobile listening as opposed to critical listening. That being said I'm rating this as a 5/5 for what it is and not what it isn't. Everything was on point for my order whether we are referring to product quality, delivery experience, or sound quality. I couldn't have asked for a better customer experience and I would definitely recommend this to my friends/ family/ or anyone looking into this product
ATH-M50X... These headphones guys.... These... Omg guys... These headphones.
These headphones are music to my ears. Literally and figuratively.
I read reviews and pro-tips for months before deciding on the purchase. I am not disappointed. More so, I am immensely impressed.
I have owned countless skullcandy and sony headphones. These blow any of those so far out of the water. Sooo far.
The sound is well rounded and it seems incredibly true to the waveform.
As it states in every other review, the build quality is, what I call, Deutsche-Standard. Absolutely impeccable.
They're very comfy. The aesthetics are jaw dropping. The three detachable cables are clearly the result of a company doing what it can to impress their customer and successfully evolve an already magnificent product.
The fiio amp is also an added bonus. I don't need it, but most definitely appreciate the gesture. Great opportunity for a re-gift!
Butterflyphoto also include a microfiber cloth in the package. What a deal!
Extremely impressive headphones, a gift for a friend(fiio amp), and a microfiber cloth; all for half the price of some shoddy Beats Pro headgear.
I went to beatbuy, I put them on my head. Listened. Saw the price tag and lol'd so hard.

Ho Lee Smokes! I ordered this product about a month ago and I just found the remaining pieces of skull fragmention that I lost due to these headphones blowing my eff'n brains out, Hombre! I originally bought these to drown out the weirdo's at the gym who grunt like an infant dropping a dirty bomb and smell the same way, but these things are so dope I refuse to take them off. I wear them in the car illegally. I wear them on the toilet. I wear them while I get white girl schwasted. The noise cancellation is beyond great. I wear them when my wife just needs someone to vent to. It's done wonders for our marriage. I've dropped10 lbs. and my cholesterol is good. These things are life changing. I'm the guy everyone at the gym looks up to now. Your children want to call me dad. If you do not purchase a pair of these with the amp you're only cheating yourself and your family. It's a waste of money not to. A few years ago I got caught up in the "beats" hype, I'm serious when I tell you they're seriously $##T! When I called the company to complain they made me feel like a schmuck. Dont be a schmuck. Be like the motherfather Jules from Pulp Fiction, Honey Bunny!
Worth 2X the price (at least)....they're that good!
I have owned these headphones for 2 weeks now and worn them every day, multiple times/day. These are the best headphones I have owned to-date. Full disclosure, I am an audiophile newbie and had seen ATH 50's reviewed by MKHD. The more I researched, the more I found both audio noobs and salties loved them. I decided to go a step up and get the M50X's.
Hi's and Low's are fantastic. I don't feel it leans any way in particular and glad it emits some good bass when warranted. Performance-wise, the sound is well rounded to fit a full suite of music preferences. They are near noise-cancellation quality with minor leakage. Perfect for flights or noisy travel. I've even worn them napping when the outside noise was too much (more on comfort later). Given the depth of sound, I plan to add a blue tooth attachment for phone mic while on the go and I plan to mod-mic it for gaming sessions as well. The quality of sound is that good, i see no reason to deny my experience from either of those mediums.
I was not sure how big a risk I was taking with the color scheme of these headphones but I couldn't help myself from ordering over the black or white versions because they were unique and the color seemed to give them character. I was right. These things look fantastic and when I'm not using them, they look great resting around the neck. I bought a family member the black versions which also looked great, more urban, neo. The white ones looked great, just not sure how they would hold up to smudges. Regardless, ATH was very detailed in their build of this product. Even the chords match the blue of the cans, not to mention that gold ring around each earpiece. All of the material feels durable and the three chords give me options depending if I'm mobile, stationed work or stationed gaming.
I've had turtle beach headphones prior as my only over-ear headphone experience. The crown of my head always hurt after an hour of use. Based upon the lightness of the ATH's and the way the headset cups the ears, I don't feel pressure anywhere on the head, making it possible for me to wear for hours while at home. I also have a relatively large head, but no negative impact on the comfort with this product. Very comfortable. If you are new to over-ear headsets, note that your ears will likely get warm after many hours of use. Not a concern for this specific product, just a characteristic of all closed over-ear headphones. If that is a strong concern, consider an open headset to get the open air experience (just know your audio is now open to the environment for a different listening experience).
Totally worth it.
These headphones are worth it. I create beats and mix in my project studio. Its said that you shouldn't mix with headphones, but we all can't have our monitor speakers craked up at 2 am. They dont throw me off with sweetening which usually is hard to find with other brand headphones. What I hear from the headphones translate well to my monitor speakers so when I check what I've done its not a night and day nightmare comparison. I haven't used these very long and I totally trust them already.
To add to all of that I had to get the x model because I've always had bad luck with cables and these come with three cables for different purposes. Having an option to replace the cables and other parts was a slam dunk for me.
Love me some M50's
Love these headphones! They sound better than beats and most Bose headphones out there. Save yourself almost a couple hundred bucks, and buy yourself a set of these.
I compared these with the Bose QC15 and the noise canceling tech bothered my ears. I also compared these with the AT-Pro700 and the fit and feel of these headphones is much more comfortable and I think the sound is more full and rich. Personally, for anyone beginning to get into a better set of headphones and you don't care about having the "brand" names out there at bestbuy or what have you, go with a set of these!
Awesome value. These are hands down some of the best headphones out there and certainly the best under $200 and better than some of those well known brand ones that come in all colors whose name we won't mention. High quality build, extremely comfortable and the sound quality is excellent. You will not find a better value on a headset anywhere else. Comes with three cords which is a plus. Only gripe I have with them is that you have to buy replacement cords from them if they ever do break or your lose one, due to the unique locking feature on the end that plugs into the headset.
